Trey Burns is in his seventh year as Associate Director of Bands at Permian High School where he is director of brass studies and conducts Concert Band 2. Bands under his direction have achieved consecutive Sweepstakes ratings at Texas U.I.L. Concert and Sightreading Contest. Additionally, his students have earned admission into the 6A TMEA All-State bands and have been awarded superior ratings at Solo and Ensemble competitions. Prior to Burns’ appointment at PHS, he served as a freelance musician and private lesson instructor in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metropolitan area. Mr. Burns earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 2007 and a Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance in 2010 from West Texas A&M University in Canyon, TX. While studying at WTAMU he performed with the Amarillo Symphony Orchestra and the Amarillo Little Theatre. Mr. Burns began doctoral studies in trumpet performance at Florida State University in 2010 and held a graduate teaching assistantship for the trumpet studio under the direction of Grammy Award Winner, Christopher Moore. As a member of the FSU trumpet ensemble, he was twice named a finalist in the National Trumpet Competition ensemble division (2010 and 2011) and performed with the FSU Symphony Orchestra in the premiere of Fanfare; Reminiscence and Celebration by Pulitzer Prize winner, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. He performed numerous concerts with the FSU Wind Orchestra and commercial recordings are available. As an adjudicator, Mr. Burns has served on committees for the Texas Regions 6 and 16 TMEA competitions. Furthermore, Burns holds professional memberships in the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, International Trumpet Guild and has been inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda Honorary Fraternity.
